Bjorn Borg might be one of the greatest tennis players of all time, but that is apparently not enough for his son, Leo Borg, to take advice from him.
Between 1978 and 1980, the French Open and the Wimbledon Championships belonged to only one man. Borg won both titles three times in a row, and in total, he managed to win the title at Roland Garros six times, and he also won five consecutive Wimbledon titles.
Borg was on his way to possibly becoming the greatest tennis player of all time, having won 11 Grand Slam titles at 25 years of age. But it was at that age that the Swede very unexpectedly retired from the sport.
In recent years, Borg served as the Team Europe captain at the Laver Cup, and he has kept in touch with the sport. His son, Leo Borg, is a tennis player as well, and Bjorn also spoke about his son in a recent interview with Mundo Deportivo.
Borg was present in Barcelona for the Barcelona Open, and when asked why he traveled to Spain, the former Swedish player explained that he came to watch his son play in the qualifying of the tournament.
"First, my son was playing in the qualifying round. And for me, this tournament has meant a lot in my life. I came here for the first time when I was a junior, 14 years old. I came here and played, and then I played in major tournaments many times. This is a big tournament, not just for Spaniards, but for all European players. It means a lot. And if you win, it means even more."
Leo Borg, who is currently ranked 496th in the world, lost in the first round of the qualifying 5-7, 6-7(1). The 21-year-old's results and his ranking suggest that he could use some advice from his legendary father, but according to Bjorn Borg, his son doesn't want to take advice from him.
"Our son plays good tennis and travels a lot. I said, 'Do you have any questions? You can always come to me and ask me anything.' And my son says, 'You don't understand anything about tennis.' Fine, thank you very much. But you can come to me whenever you want. He has a good team that travels with him. And I'm there whenever he wants or needs me."
"He never watched a game with me. He started out playing sports, soccer, ice hockey, whatever. My wife and I told each other he'd like soccer, that he'd play soccer and not tennis. He won't play tennis because people will compare him to me and all that."
"So he played a lot of soccer, and we were very happy. But one day he told us he wanted to play tennis. Well, okay, he decided. And that's how it started. Yes, it can be a problem to be compared to me or anyone else, but he likes tennis, he's happy. And he plays it very well."
Borg's revelation about his son's words is really shocking. Leo Borg has been struggling to record wins even at the ITF M25 level, while his father is an 11-time Grand Slam champion.
Bjorn Borg believes that while the sport has changed, when it comes to the mindset, nothing has changed, which is why he could certainly help his son.
"No, I think the mentality in tennis is always the same. Tennis has changed a lot because everyone hits the ball much harder than we do now. That's the easiest way to explain the difference between tennis yesterday and today. But thinking, concentrating, and working hard are all the same."
