Carlos Alcaraz and his younger brother, Jaime, have been competing in Barcelona simultaneously, and the
ATP world No. 2 spoke about watching Jaime play.
13-year-old Jaime has created headlines in the past for being a talented young player. Some of the attention is undoubtedly due to Carlos being his brother, but the four-time Grand Slam champion previously admitted that Jaime plays very well.
However, Carlos also does not want Jaime to be bombarded with pressure and expectations. He would
like the media to leave the teenager alone and let him develop at his own pace, rather than constantly being under the spotlight.
Although that want is understandable, Jaime avoiding any attention in Barcelona was impossible since Carlos was competing at the same Venue. The younger Alcaraz has been playing in the under-14s.
Carlos was pictured watching as his brother reached the semifinals. He repeatedly smiled as Jaime won his match and played at a high level that underscored the potential to become a great player in his own right.
In a press conference, Alcaraz was asked about Jaime. The fan favorite revealed that, despite being a big supporter of his brother, he does not discuss playing tournaments with him much and instead gets more information from their father.
"Don’t think he tells me much. At home, I ask him which tournament he’s going to play and he says, ‘I’m going to play here.’ And I just go, ‘Great, good luck,’ and that’s about it."
"It’s not like he tells me much or asks me anything either — I usually ask my dad more, how things are going, how he sees him, since he’s the one who follows him and sees him more regularly. And he keeps me updated: 'He’s doing better,' or 'Right now he’s a bit stuck,' but honestly, the last thing he told me was that he’s doing really well."
Alcaraz, who defeated Alex de Minaur on his way to another final in Barcelona, was shocked by how well Jaime played in the match he watched. The two-time Wimbledon winner also noted that Jaime hits too many drop shots, humorously inferring that he got that trait from him.
"And today, I was honestly surprised — today I was really surprised by the level he has. He hits more drop shots than he should — I don’t know who he gets that from (laughs) — but honestly, I try to watch him whenever I can."
Being in the same city to watch Jaime is an opportunity that Carlos is very grateful for, and he tries to take advantage of it whenever possible, as watching him play is something he considers a privilege.
"It had been a long time since I’d seen him play, and now that he’s playing here in the same club, I tried to come a bit earlier to catch his match. It makes me really happy, and I love watching him play whenever I get the chance."
"So we’ll see how he does — I play tomorrow too, so if I have time I’ll try to sneak away again. But honestly, it’s a privilege for me to watch him as much as I can."
