Two former Grand Slam finalists are on the
entry list for the 2025
Kitzbuhel Open, which is scheduled for July 20th to 26th.
Since 1969, the tournament has been solely played in Kitzbuhel. Vienna and Salzburg were among the other cities to host the event before it elected to no longer alternate where it is held.
Dominic Thiem thrilled the Austrian fans by winning his home tournament in 2019. He reached what turned out to be the last final of his career before retirement in 2023, losing to
Sebastian Baez.
Juan Martin Del Potro, Casper Ruud, Pete Sampras, Alex Corretja, and Albert Costa are five of the many players who have won the Kitzbuhel Open title since it was first officially played all the way back in 1894. It is one of the oldest tennis events in the world.
Matteo Berrettini is the defending champion. That was one of three clay court tournaments he won last year with Rafael Nadal's former team member, Francisco Roig.
They split in the closing stages of the 2024 season.
Berrettini plans to defend his title. Many top players will opt to rest or play at the Citi Open on hard courts during the same week since it can prepare them for the following week's 2025 Canadian Open.
The Italian has resisted any temptation to do that by putting his name on the entry list. Berrettini won two clay-court titles in as many weeks at the 2024 editions of the Swiss Open in Gstaad and the Kitzbuhel Open.
Berrettini's involvement cannot be guaranteed at this stage, though. He has not played since the 2025 Italian Open after retiring with an injury against Casper Ruud. The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up hopes to be fit for this year's tournament at SW19.
Alexander Bublik's newfound love for clay has been demonstrated again by his inclusion on the Kitzbuhel Open entry list. The Kazakhstani used to dislike playing on the surface, but shocked himself by reaching the 2025 French Open quarterfinals.
Bublik also signed up for the 2025 Gstaad Open, which occurs the week before the event in Kitzbuhel. He might not play at either tournament if he has a deep run at Wimbledon, which is possible after his title run at the Halle Open,
including a win against Jannik Sinner.
Marin Cilic is the sole Grand Slam champion on the entry list. The 37-year-old, who
became the lowest-ranked ATP champion ever last year, showed what he can still do by winning a Challenger event in Nottingham with some trademark powerful serving and hitting.
2023 champion Baez is always one of the favorites at 250 and 500-level clay-court events. Six of the Argentine's seven
ATP titles, and 10 of his 11 finals, have come on the dirt. The only exception was winning the 2023 Winston-Salem Open on hard courts.
