The 2025 Indian Wells Open begins on March 5th, and the WTA entry list for the prestigious tournament has been released.
Sometimes referred to as the "fifth Grand Slam," the Indian Wells Open is one of the most eagerly anticipated tournaments at the start of each season. Both the men's and women's events receive much attention every year.
As expected, the entry list for this year's Indian Wells Open is very strong. Iga Swiatek will defend her title. She defeated Maria Sakkari in last year's final and was in excellent form throughout the 2024 edition of the event in California.
The five-time Grand Slam champion dominated the WTA Tour from February until the end of the French Open in 2024. Her title run in Indian Wells was one of five titles she won during that time, including four WTA 1000 crowns.
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka was shocked by Emma Navarro in the round of 16 last year. The Belarusian's results dipped by her standards for a few months after winning the 2024 Australian Open before she regained momentum in the season's closing months.
Sabalenka came closest to winning the Indian Wells Open in 2023 when Elena Rybakina beat her in the final. The tournament always has one of the slowest hard courts of the season, which explains Swiatek's success and why Sabalenka has not been as dominant.
Former champion Rybakina, who managed an epic victory against Ons Jabeur at the ongoing Abu Dhabi Open, has also committed to returning to California. She hopes to thrive at the event once again.
After splitting from Goran Ivanisevic after the 2025 Australian Open, Rybakina started working with a new team member linked to her controversial ex-coach Stefano Vukov, who remains under investigation for mistreating the Kazakhstani despite her claiming he never did that.
Coco Gauff will receive excellent home support at the upcoming Indian Wells Open. She came close to playing Swiatek in the final last year but lost to Sakkari despite being the favorite to triumph before the match.
Gauff suffered a setback at the recent Australian Open after losing in the quarterfinal against Paula Badosa. Despite making considerable improvements with her forehand since Matt Daly became her coach, it broke down against the Spaniard.
However, there were always likely to be some bumps in the road. Gauff's years of inconsistency off that wing were never going to be fixed in a few weeks, and the progress she has made with that shot is still impressive.
2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys' appearance at the Indian Wells Open will probably be her first since triumphing in Melbourne if she plays. She withdrew from the 2025 Qatar Open and 2025 Dubai Championships with a leg injury.
Keys was also forced to pull out of the 2025 ATX Open because she re-entered the Top 10 after winning the Australian Open. Strict WTA rules state that only one Top 10 player is allowed at WTA 250 events, and Jessica Pegula was already occupying that position.
Naomi Osaka, the 2018 Indian Wells Open champion and former world No. 1, is also on the entry list, but her involvement is uncertain at this stage because she withdrew from the Qatar Open due to an abdominal injury.
Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, Danielle Collins, who caused much controversy with her reaction to the Australian Open fans after winning a match, and Paula Badosa are some of the other names on the entry list.
