The entry list for the first Grand Slam tournament of the season has been revealed as players ramp up their preparations for the 2025 Australian Open.
Every year, the first major of the season comes very quickly, as it's held already in the third week of the new season. That means players have little time to prepare for it, and it often reflects their off-season preparations.
Like every year, players will have a chance to compete in multiple ATP events prior to the Melbourne Slam, but some chose not to do it, including the defending champion, Jannik Sinner, who will attempt his first Grand Slam title defense.
Sinner won the 2024 title after beating Daniil Medvedev in a five-set final, and both players will naturally return to Melbourne Park also in 2025.
Unlike other Grand Slams in the calendar, the Australian Open can often welcome almost the full field of players as they start a new season after a one-month break, meaning that there shouldn't be any injury problems forcing them out of play.
The 2025 Australian Open will run from January 12th to 26th, so once again, it will start on Sunday as it did in 2024 when it was the first time that the event started on Sunday.
Joining the two finalists from 2024 will be plenty of players capable of challenging for a major title. Most notably, Novak Djokovic, who is a 10-time champion at the event, will be chasing his 11th and 25th Grand Slam title overall.
Carlos Alcaraz has won four Grand Slam titles in his tennis career already, including two last year, but he has yet to taste success Down Under, something he will want to change in 2025.
But these players are not the only ones who will be challenging for the trophy. Alexander Zverev will likely be the second seed in Melbourne, and he has already stood in two major finals, losing both.
One name on the entry list will delight the Australian crowd, as Nick Kyrgios is set to make his return to the tennis courts, and he will be using his protected ranking to join the field.
The protected ranking allows tennis players who were injured for an extended period to use their ranking before injury to enter tournaments.
Other players who used the same option are Pablo Carreno Busta, Reilly Opelka, Kei Nishikori, Jenson Brooksby, and Dominic Stricker, who will all be hoping to earn some valuable ranking points to boost their ranking.
The entry list also includes many players who will be eager to try to reach their maiden major final, such as Holger Rune, Alex de Minaur, Jack Draper, and Ben Shelton.
