Tennis returns to the United States. The first tournament held in the country this year will be the 2025 ATX Open in Austin, and the draw has already been made public.
With the Sunshine Doubles in Indian Wells and Miami right around the corner, the ATX Open in Austin has an absolutely perfect spot on the calendar. This WTA 250 event is played from February 24th until March 2nd at the Westwood Country Club in Austin, Texas, United States.
This year, the fans won't have a chance to see all of the players that the tournament organizers intended to bring to Austin. Madison Keys should have played at the event, but she was forced to withdraw.
The WTA rule allows only one Top 10 player to compete at the WTA 250 tournaments, and in Austin, that will be Jessica Pegula. Keys wasn't in the Top 10 when she initially planned to compete at the event, but since she won the Australian Open, she became ineligible to play in Austin.
Pegula will play, and she will be the top seed. The American player will take on Arantxa Rus in the first round of the tournament. Already in the second round, fans can see one of probably many all-American duels.
Home wild card Malaika Rapolu will play against Nuria Parrizas Diaz, and if both Pegula and Rapolu win their first-round matches, they will meet in the second round of the tournament.
There is at least one all-American match that will certainly happen. The fifth-seeded McCartney Kessler will take on Caty McNally in the first round. The winner of this match can then play against Bernarda Pera in the second round. She will play a qualifier in her first match.
Fans in Austin will also have a chance to see a two-time Grand Slam champion in action. Petra Kvitova will make her long-awaited return to the tennis courts after receiving a wild card.
She is one of the players who recently became a mother and returned to the tennis courts, and she will try to take inspiration from Belinda Bencic, who has already managed to win a tournament.
In her first match in Austin, Kvitova will play against Jodie Burrage. Should she succeed, her second-round opponent would be the winner of the match between Ajla Tomljanovic and Katie Volynets.
The second seed at this event is Diana Shnaider, who also received a wild card. She will play against a qualifier in the first round. In the second round, she can meet either Sorana Cirstea or Laura Siegemund. Both are experienced players.
