18-year-old super talent, Joao Fonseca, and Holger Rune will both make their debuts at the Laver Cup this year.
Rune is older of the two players, and despite being one of the best European players for a couple of years now, the Dane has never competed at the Laver Cup before.
After having an outstanding season in 2022, Rune was set to compete at the Laver Cup in 2023, but he was ultimately forced to withdraw from the tournament. Last year, the Danish player wasn't among the selected players.
But unless he injures himself again, Rune should now finally make his debut at this popular competition. He won't get a chance to be coached by Bjorn Borg, as the Swede isn't Team Europe's coach anymore. It's Yannick Noah who will lead the European team in San Francisco this year from September 19th until 21st.
Rune, of course, is incredibly excited to make his debut at the competition, also because he will get a chance to play along the likes of Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz, who will be his teammates.
"It feels amazing to be selected to play for Team Europe in San Francisco this year. I was so close to playing the Laver Cup a few years ago, but unfortunately got injured and couldn’t make it."
"I knew that if I got the chance to play again, I would be ready and I’m really looking forward to the competition and to visiting San Francisco for the first time. It’s going to be a great atmosphere, and I know from talking to the other players that the Laver Cup is one of the most enjoyable competitions of the year. I cannot wait to be part of it."
Another player who will make his debut at the competition is Joao Fonseca. The 18-year-old Brazilian has, naturally, never played at the tournament before. For a teenager, it will be a great experience, and he will be one of the main players attracting the fans in San Francisco.
"I am so excited to have been selected to play for Team World at the Laver Cup. I’ve watched the event since I was a kid and always dreamed of playing. To now be on a team with guys like [Taylor] Fritz, [Tommy] Paul, and [Ben] Shelton, and to be coached by Andre Agassi, it’s just unbelievable! I will give it everything I’ve got."
For Andre Agassi, who is the new Team World captain, replacing John McEnroe, picking Fonseca was a no-brainer, simply because of how exciting a player the Brazilian teenager is.
"Joao is the kind of young talent that makes the Laver Cup so special. He’s fearless, energetic, has a huge game, and loves the big stage. His performance this season shows me he’s ready for this. I’m sure he will thrive in the team environment, and I’m really looking forward to working with him and getting to know him better."
