Stefanos Tsitsipas will not compete the week before the 2025 French Open at Roland Garros after withdrawing from the 2025
Hamburg Open.
The Greek No. 1 was set to be among the seeded players in Hamburg, a tournament that was moved from its previous spot in July after Wimbledon to the final week before the season's second Grand Slam at Roland Garros.
Tsitsipas finished as the runner-up at the 2020 Hamburg Open to Andrey Rublev. That iteration of the tournament was played with restricted crowd numbers because it took place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
After withdrawing from the event, the 2019
ATP Finals champion will not be able to match or better his previous run in Hamburg. Tsitsipas has not given an official reason for his decision not to compete.
Although there are withdrawals before almost all tournaments, Tsitsipas' decision is quite surprising since he has had a poor clay-court season by his high standards so far, registering a 6-4 win/loss record.
Lorenzo Musetti ended Tsitsipas' hopes of winning a fourth Monte-Carlo Masters title by beating him in the quarterfinal. That was followed the next week by an unfortunate retirement in the 2025 Barcelona Open quarterfinal against Arthur Fils.
History repeated itself at the 2025 Madrid Open and 2025 Italian Open, but in earlier rounds. Musetti beat the Greek for a second time in the space of a few weeks in Madrid, registering a straight-sets triumph.
Fils overcame Tsitsipas in Rome, but it was not via retirement this time. The Frenchman looked to be in serious trouble after losing the first set 2-6, but stormed back to secure a dramatic and entertaining 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win.
There was a
heated interaction between the two players at the net afterward. Tsitsipas hit Fils when he closed the net during a point in the second set, and the two had a passionate exchange about it, which led to the umpire intervening.
Tsitsipas's lack of form during the previous four tournaments would have made some players feel that getting additional match practice is the right thing to do, especially since he was already on the entry list.
Novak Djokovic took the opposite approach by
accepting a wild card into the 2025 Geneva Open. However, the 24-time Grand Slam champion did not play at the Italian Open, meaning he needs match practice even more.
Elena Rybakina also made a late decision to play the week before Roland Garros. The Kazakhstani will compete at the 2025 Strasbourg Open after a challenging clay-court swing and a recent slide down the rankings.
Sebastian Korda was another man who withdrew from the Hamburg Open. The American returned at the start of 2025 after being ruled out of all post-US Open tournaments in 2024 due to recovering from a severe elbow injury, which required surgery.
In his first event back, he reached the 2025 Adelaide International final, losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime. Korda's results since have been mixed, including a 3-4 win/loss record on clay this year. No official reason was given for his not playing in Hamburg.
