Stefanos Tsitsipas produced one of the most absurd winners in recent memory during his match against Marcos Giron at the 2022 Mallorca Championships.
The drama unfolded right from the first game of the match when it looked like Giron was destined for a comfortable hold to 30 to kick things off. He attacked the usually fragile Tsitsipas backhand to elicit an unforced error.
A defenseless Tsitsipas stretched his muscles to try and get to the ball and played a stunning lob that just about managed to cross the net. It bounced on Giron's side of the court, and the trajectory changed almost miraculously.
The ball spun backward to the Greek's side and dropped dead. The American was bamboozled and did his best to reach it by throwing his racket, but there was nothing more he could do but acknowledge the moment of brilliance and clever shotmaking.
Both players laughed, with Tsitsipas apologizing for the point. Mallorca has been traditionally windy again this year, and the combination of wind and an odd bounce made this ball impossible to return.
The video was shared by Tennis TV on Instagram, and the admin called it the "strangest" winner that Tsitsipas would ever hit on the court. And it was a stunning shot.
"The strangest winner @stefanostsitsipas98 will ever hit. Guaranteed."
Tsitsipas won in three sets against Giron to reach the quarterfinal in Mallorca. He is playing at this tournament after accepting a late wild card and is bidding to win his first-ever ATP title on grass.
Nine of his career titles have been on hard or clay courts, and he is at his most vulnerable on grass. He will play France's Benjamin Bonzi in the semifinal. The draw is certainly opening up for him, and if he produces shots like the one below, then there is no stopping him.
