Nick Kyrgios sent his legion of social media followers swirling on Monday when he shared photos of full-back tattoos featuring Pokemon characters.

Kyrgios, synonymous with being a tennis maverick, is also no stranger to the unpredictable off the court. In the past, Kyrgios spoke of his adoration for the mysterious anime creatures, during his trip to the Pokemon Centre in Tokyo last year.

And he had teased his fans about getting inked up in recent days without giving further details. The Australian, who is currently on a hiatus from the game due to a wrist injury, has been in the United States for a few weeks now and took part in the 2023 Ultimate Tennis Showdown in a non-playing capacity.

A day before the exhibition tournament, he shared a sneak peek of himself with Boxing legend Mike Tyson with the caption, "Perfect chaos, something big coming." It's clear now that Kyrgios wasn't referring to the weekend's tennis action in Los Angeles.

"Studio days in LA."

Kyrgios captioned on his Instagram

"5 artists at one of the best studios in the world. Wish me luck, back is getting completely covered."

Instead, it was an hour-long session at Ganga Tattoo LA in northwest Los Angeles, where Kyrgios was inked on his back by five tattoo artists. Kyrgios shared photos of the process and later posted on his Instagram stories, a tattoo he says was designed by his personal friend and Melbourne native Alexi Bouras.

After the session, Kyrgios shared the results, which has since divided opinion on the internet, with fans perplexed at the manpower required to ink up his back. One fan commented on getting confused, thinking Kyrgios was undergoing another surgery.

Obviously, the 27-year-old's injury problems are well documented. He has played once this season largely due to knee surgery. Kyrgios was on the verge of a full comeback to the ATP Tour but suffered a setback before Wimbledon, where he tore an ankle ligament in his wrist.
