Nick Kyrgios found himself once again in hot water as he lost his cool after losing the first set of his semifinal match against Andy Murray at the 2022 Stuttgart Open.
The Australian star didn't play poorly by any stretch in the first set and had two crucial breakpoints, which, if converted, would have resulted in a completely different match. Yet, it reached the tie-break, where his opponent won 7-5, and Kyrgios became annoyed by it.
No player likes to lose sets or matches, and Kyrgios is no different. However, perhaps the 27-year-old is a bit more emotional when things don't go his way. He broke his racket and received a point penalty.
Before that, he recived a code violation for hitting a ball into the crowd earlier in the set. He was determined not to let the moment affect him, but that was not the case and started the second set on his serve, being already 0-15 down.
He then compounded matters by adding a double fault, got broken in the first game of the second set, and the match was slipping out of his hands. But that was not the end of the drama.
Kyrgios then received another code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct for arguing with a fan. This resulted in a game penalty, and the supervisor was summoned to the court.
Ultimately, Murray won the match 7-6(5), 6-2, and advanced to the final in Stuttgart. Kyrgios, who had claimed that he was the best grass-court player in the world just recently, will have to prepare for Halle next week. The Briton, for his part, believes Kyrgios' talent is evident but needs to iron out his on-court outbursts to have better results
"Nick has the potential to be one of the best players in the world, there’s absolutely no question about that. But yeah, he obviously got very frustrated in the second set and made it a lot easier for me."
