Nick Kyrgios defeated world number 1, Daniil Medvedev in the second round of Montreal but that's not what's important in his life currently.
It is not often that fans get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what is happening in players' lives, but things are different with Nick Kyrgios, who has always left his heart on his sleeve.
The Aussie recently opened up about a difficult period he is going through at the moment due to his mother's health, and the toll this is taking on him considering he is not able to be there to support her.
After going the distance but overcoming world number 1 Daniil Medvedev (6-7, 6-4, 6-2), Kyrgios wanted to send a message of support to his mother. But that was not all. After the win, the Aussie went on to explain how his entire family is going through life-defining moments, with him unable to be there.
“It’s hard because even traveling now, my mum is in hospital at the moment, my dad hasn’t been very well, my brother just had a baby and I don’t get to be there with my family when normal people would like to be with them.”
Going on to speak about the realities of the life of a tennis player, Kyrgios explained how there is always a lot of things going on behind the scenes, opening up to his millions of fans:
"There’s a lot of things people don’t see. They only see me winning, losing, throwing a racquet, doing those things. They don’t really understand the challenges that I face or what people on tour face, what’s going on in their personal lives”
But it was immediately after his win over Medvedev that the man from Down Under took his chance and wrote a personal message to his mother:"Be strong ma <3"
