A packed crowd gathered inside BTarena in Cluj-Napoca to witness tennis royalty turn back time in doubles.
Earlier in January, when it was announced that Romania's annual summer sporting festival would feature three former World No. 1s with 32 Grand Slams between them, tickets began selling out fast.
At the time, Simona Halep was still suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency for consuming the banned substance Roxadustat. She was scheduled to lock horns with the tennis couple comprising Andre Agassi and his wife, Steffi Graf.
The BTarena, which houses about 10,000 fans, was sold out to watch Halep team up with former Romanian ATP player Andrei Pavel to face Agassi and Graf last Saturday. It's not the first time that the American-German duo competed in a match together.
In February, they joined forces to win the second edition of the Pickleball Slam and defeated John McEnroe and Maria Sharapova to collect a $1 million paycheck in prize money.
Agassi spoke after the exhibition match in Cluj-Napoca about his delight in playing with his wife, Graf, and admitted that he couldn't have chosen a better partner. The two of them would be joined by retired players Justin Gimelstob and Horia Tecau.
The action, which took place on Saturday, June 15th, began with the doubles set. Agassi and Gimelstob paired up to face Tecau and Pavel. The Romanian duo won.
The main event, which those inside the stadium paid top dollar to see, was the mixed doubles match. Agassi and 22-time Grand Slam champion Graf took on Halep and Pavel.
Once again, the home players came out on top, as Halep and Pavel won a long set 8-4. The exhibition was certainly a great spectacle, rekindling some old memories of iconic shotmaking.
One tennis fan also tried to recreate the famous marriage proposal from Wimbledon, to which Graf brushed it off humorously.
