Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas finally concluded their two-day match at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, with the Greek player ultimately winning.
A day is rather long, with 24 hours, but sometimes a day can be too short, and that’s what happened to Murray recently at Wimbledon, as his superb momentum was cut short by darkness.
Murray and Tsitsipas were playing a really competitive match at the grass-court major, with the British player performing very well—upset-worthy good—but ultimately, it didn’t come to that.
The match spanned across two days because darkness stopped play midway through. By the time the match was suspended, Murray was up 2-1 in sets and playing much better than Tsitsipas, who looked unsure of what to do.
Tsitsipas had won the opening set in the tie-break. Murray stormed back to win the second set in the tie-break 7-2. He then won the third set 6-4 and looked in a really solid position to go on and win a third set in a row.
Unfortunately, as the match started late, curfew stopped it, and the play had to be suspended. The match continued the following day, but Murray’s momentum was gone.
Tsitsipas also had a much better idea of how to play and what to do, so the fourth set went to the Greek player 7-3 in the tie-break. The final set didn’t offer anything new for Murray.
He battled and battled but ultimately lost it 4-6, sending Tsitsipas to the third round of the tournament, as the Greek player won the five-set battle 7-6(3), 6-7(2), 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4.
The British player was very livid in the final moments of the match, understanding that he would have won this match had it continued the day before, but sometimes that’s how things work out.
If he had been on the ropes and then turned it around, he would have favored the stoppage, but as he lost, it was unfortunate for him.
