There very quite a few gaffes at this year's Wimbledon Championships, and the latest one came during Paula Badosa's press conference.
A few days ago, a reporter embarrassed their tennis knowledge by addressing Victoria Azarenka as if she were from Russia. She's actually from Belarus, which she told the reporter with an astonished look on her face.
Something similar happened to her compatriot Aryna Sabalenka, who was interviewed following her second-round match. The reporter asked Sabalenka whether she was hopeful of doing better at Wimbledon than she did last year. The problem is, she didn't play last year.
Sabalenka's good friend Paula Badosa experienced a similar embarrassing situation in her post-match press conference. The Spaniard played against Marta Kostyuk, injuring herself in the match and retiring from the match early in the second set.
In the post-match press conference, Badosa endured a rather cringey exchange with a reporter who was apparently not aware of how the match went. The press conference opened with the reporter literally congratulating Badosa on her win.
It was a really bizarre situation, and you can see the full video of it below. The reporter had to be told multiple times that Badosa didn't win her match, with the Spaniard looking incredibly puzzled by what was happening.
Reporter: "Congratulations for your win."
Paula Badosa: "I lost."
Reporter: "You missed some matches because of injury."
Paula Badosa: "Yes."
Reporter: "Could you please tell us about your fitness and confidence level, please."
Paula Badosa: "For your information, I just lost. I didn't win. So, yeah."
The moderator: "She didn't win."
Reporter: "Not win?"
Paula Badosa: "No."
The reporter then proceeded to ask the same questions again. Badosa was a good sport and responded to the question. She will want to forget her disappointing retirement as well as the press conference.
