Holger Rune laid bare his disappointment of being allocated an outside show court for his opening match at this year's US Open.
And now the Danish star has spoken his thoughts to one of his country's channels, TV2 Sport, and he did not pull any punches. Rune, currently ranked at a career-high mark of No. 4 entering this year's US Open, showed his displeasure with his court allocation on X a few days ago.
He posted a Grounds Maps telling his fans on-site where to locate the court in which he would play his opening match against Roberto Carballes Baena. One of Denmark's tennis experts, Peter Bastiansen, called it 'a lack of respect' that the fourth-ranked player in the world has to play in one of the smallest courts at the Open.
Court 5 is one of the smallest show courts with a maximum seating capacity of 1,148. Asked to give his thoughts to TV2 Sport, Rune concurs with his compatriot Bastiansen's comments and lashed out at two unnamed ATP officials for their hand in the scheduling.
" I completely agree. It is two ATP supervisors/managers who always give me the worst courts. So that's how it is."
Rune does not understand the motive behind it, but adds that there is 'something in it'. Nevertheless, he is not fussed about it and will instead channel his focus on winning a Grand Slam. He believes that smaller courts can generate the best atmosphere.
"100 percent. But then again, I don't mind complaining about it. I have a tournament to win and I have to be focused. I have to do my best, no matter what court I play on. There can be a crazy good atmosphere out on these small courts because everyone can come in and see them, so I'm really looking forward to it. But of course, it is a strange planning."
