Taylor Fritz was forced to withdraw from the 2022 Madrid Open, despite previously playing at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
The American has been having a superb year so far. He is ranked inside the Top 5 in the 2022 ATP Race to Turin, but an injury stopped him from competing at the 2022 Madrid Open.
After a solid 2022 red dirt debut in Monte Carlo, Fritz was hoping to keep the level going at the ATP Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome. Yet, he will have to change his plans after being forced to withdraw from the Madrid Open.
Historically, the tournament in the Spanish capital has never been the best place for him, as he reached the second round in 2019 and suffered a first-round exit at the tournament last year.
However, stylistically, it's the clay-court tournament that should suit him the most, as Madrid's high altitude makes it possible for him to use his serve and his rapid forehand, which are Fritz's two main weapons.
But he won't be able to prove that he can play well at La Caja Magica in 2022, as an injury forced him out of play. The injury in question is a left foot injury and it comes at a tricky time in the season where Fritz was both playing well and racking up good points.
The injury should not be too serious, but the American player still opted to rest up and heal with an important stretch coming up with the French Open and Wimbledon not too far away.
Fritz has dealt with lower-body injuries before. In the 2022 Indian Wells Open final against Rafael Nadal, which he shockingly won 6-3, 7-6(5) to become the first player to beat the Spanish legend in 2022, he struggled with a left ankle injury but pushed through to win the title.
