The 2019 Roland Garros Juniors champion, Holger Rune is the newest ATP Tour champion as the young Dane lifted his first trophy at the 2022 Munich Open.

Holger Rune enjoyed a very interesting week at the 2022 Munich Open when he didn't lose a set throughout the tournament, defeated the first-seeded Alexander Zverev but was also forced to withdraw from the 2022 Madrid Open and saw his opponent retire in the final of the tournament.

Despite all the awkward events, there's no doubt about the high level that Rune was showing throughout the week. He started with a solid victory against young Czech, Jiri Lehecka, when he triumphed 7-6, 6-3. In the second round, he outlasted the first-seeded Alexander Zverev, who said he played the worst match in the last 7 years.

Then, after announcing the withdrawal from the Madrid Open, he showed that he deserved his spot at the tournament as he destroyed another youngster, Emil Ruusuvuori. In the semifinals, Rune took out another home player, Oscar Otte to set up the final against Botic van de Zandschulp.

Early in the final, Rune found himself 1-4 down to van de Zandschulp, however, he quickly regained the lost break and the scoreboard showed 3-4 as the Dutch player encountered health problems and took almost 15-minute medical timeout. After coming back to the court, he played 4 rallies, but assessed that he won't be able to continue and retired what handed the first ATP title to Holger Rune.
