Swiatek Arrives In Cancun Six Days Before Start Of WTA Finals

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek has arrived in Cancun, Mexico, ahead of schedule to prepare for the 2023 WTA Finals.

The prestigious season finale will begin on Sunday, October 29, featuring the world's Top 8 players. The Polish star was warmly welcomed to Cancun by trumpet-playing band and guitarists and was escorted by the tournament officials.

In a post by the tournament's Instagram account, the first photos of Swiatek touching down in Cancun were shared, with the caption, "Welcome to Cancun, Amiga!" Tunisia's Ons Jabeur jetted in on Monday night and was given a similar reception.

Swiatek's early arrival has bewildered tennis fans due to the concerns surrounding the availability of the court. With less than a week before the event starts, the tournament organizers are in a race against time to complete the construction of the new stadium.

Pictures and videos emanating from social media from passersby show that the main court, which is expected to have a capacity of holding up to 4,000 spectators, is only half built. The court has been painted, but the stands are not ready. The WTA has reportedly invested $6 million for its construction.

The eight singles players will have the chance to practice near the main court, as resorts in close proximity have accessible and fully furnished tennis courts. Swiatek's early arrival is also an indication that the Pole wants to survey the area and keep herself at ease.

The 22-year-old has never won the WTA Finals. Her best achievement at the event was a semifinal finish in 2022. This will be her third straight appearance. Swiatek will have the chance to reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Aryna Sabalenka at the end of the tournament.

Just 630 points separate the world's top two players ahead of the championships. They cannot be paired in the same group, and can only meet in the semifinal at the earliest.
