Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Denis Shapovalov: 2024 Miami Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Stefanos Tsitsipas will kick off his 2024 Miami Open campaign with a match against Denis Shapovalov, who played one match before this one.

The Greek player had an interesting time at the Indian Wells Open, looking pretty good early, but then he lost shockingly to Jiri Lehecka. He has never had the best of times at the Sunshine Double, but that loss was still surprising.

Shapovalov had some decent showings in recent weeks, but unfortunately, he threw away a win against Lorenzo Musetti at the Indian Wells Open, which cut his stay short. He started by winning a match at the Miami Open and now hopes to add another win against the seeded player.

Head-to-head:

This has been a very interesting matchup so far because Shapovalov actually gave Tsitsipas quite a bit of trouble so far. He leads the H2H 3-2 so far, although most of those matches were played a while ago. The most recent meeting happened in Barcelona last year, and Tsitsipas was able to win that match 6-3, 6-2.

Both players are playing on a level that's not their best, but there are some indicators we can look at here. The matchup will be decided by who is more stable.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Denis Shapovalov
2 H2H 3
11 Rank 126
25 Age 24
11-5 2024 W/L 3-7
311-148 Career W/L 184-156

Prediction:

Tsitsipas is generally the more stable player and is more likely to win this matchup, but Shapovalov should not be underestimated. He can certainly do some damage here, especially if his serve shows up, which has been the case for the most part recently.

He must limit the number of double faults because the Greek will punish him if he gives him too many chances. I think Shapovalov is not quite ready yet and needs a bit more time. Tsitsipas should have enough to win it.

Prediction: Stefanos Tsitsipas to win in two sets.
