Stan Wawrinka was supposed to play at the
Estoril Open this year, but the Swiss veteran announced his withdrawal, pushing back his return to clay courts.
Wawrinka is far removed from his best tennis days, and recent years have been marred with injuries for him, but the Swiss veteran is not calling it quits. He’s dead set on continuing his career, and so far this year, it’s been an interesting experience for the three-time Grand Slam champion.
The 2014 Australian Open winner has played quite a lot this year so far, and he was actually able to win quite a lot as well. Wawrinka's best run came at the Indian Wells Open, where he was able to win a few matches before Jannik Sinner stopped him in the fourth round.
After competing in the United States, Wawrinka was supposed to move to Europe and start his clay-court season in Estoril. However, the Swiss player withdrew from the ATP 250 tournament.
"It is with a heavy heart that I will unfortunately, not be able to play in this year's Estoril Open. I would like to thank the organization and João Zilhão, the tournament director for giving me this opportunity."
The three-time major winner explained that he needed more time to get himself ready to play on clay. However, that could mean anything from a minor injury to maybe just fatigue.
"Sadly, I need more time to prepare myself for the clay season and am not ready to currently compete at this level, sorry again to all my fans in Portugal that you will not be able to see me play. However, I'm looking forward to hopefully come back next year."
Even despite Wawrinka's withdrawal,
the Estoril Open entry list still includes names such as Casper Ruud, Sebastian Korda, and Pablo Carreno-Busta, and even with the Swiss player's absence, the tournament will certainly entertain the fans in Portugal.
On the other hand, Wawrinka will make sure to recover to be ready to compete at the Roland Garros. He managed to win the French Open before.
