Stan Wawrinka will be competing at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships after he was announced as a wild card recipient.

Wawrinka has made 15 visits to SW19 in his playing career but has only made the second week on four occasions. He is a two-time quarterfinalist, doing so in back-to-back years in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament that the Swiss has not placed his hands on. He has triumphed at the Australian Open (defeated Rafael Nadal in 2014), Roland Garros (defeated Novak Djokovic in 2015), and the US Open (defeated Djokovic again in 2016).

The one-hander can still complete the career Grand Slam, but the odds are stacked against him as he attempts to overcome the after-effects of surgery on his knee and foot in recent years.

Additionally, grass has not always been his favorite surface, and his record speaks for itself. Of the 16 ATP titles that Wawrinka has won, they have been on hard or clay courts, but none on grass.

That doesn't mean he's not fared well on the surface. He has won at least 30 career matches on grass and can add to that number at this year's Wimbledon.

Wawrinka made his return to the ATP Tour after a foot operation at the start of the European clay swing in late March. He lost in the first round in his first two tournaments but turned a corner in Rome, where he reached the third round.

Wawrinka played a grass-court tournament in the build-up to Wimbledon and notched a great win over Frances Tiafoe at Queen's before losing to Tommy Paul in the next round.

He has been named as one of two non-British players to receive a main draw wild card at the CHampionships. His ranking has plummeted to outside the top 200, and he can solely rely on a wild card or protected ranking to play in tournaments.

Players that received wild cards include Tim Van Rijthoven, who had a sensational week in Den Bosch, where he won his first ATP title, and home players such as Liam Broady, Jay Clarke, Alastair Gray, Paul Jubb, and Ryan Peniston. One more wild card is yet to be announced.
