Sinner In Pole Position For $615,000 Bonus After Reaching Beijing Final

Jannik Sinner has already enjoyed a phenomenal season on the court, and he may get a significant bonus in his bank account if results between now and the end of the season go his way.

Sinner's successes at Grand Slams understandably receive the most attention. He secured his first major title by recovering from two sets down in the Australian Open final against Daniil Medvedev.

That was followed by winning the US Open title after beating Taylor Fritz in a one-sided final. The Italian only dropped two sets during his seven matches at Flushing Meadows, and one of those was in the opening round.

Sinner's achievement at the US Open was particularly impressive because of the attention surrounding his two positive tests for the banned substance clostebol, news broke a few days before the year's final Grand Slam began.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) initially cleared him, but the World Anti-Doping Agency felt he bore more fault for the positive tests than the ITIA determined and appealed the ruling.

Sinner also became the world No. 1 for the first time during the French Open in 2024. He has stayed at the top of the rankings due to his continued consistency in the months since.

The world No. 1's dramatic season makes it easy to forget his successes outside of Grand Slams before his doping scandal became public. This includes titles and finals at ATP 500 tournaments.

The Italian's first tournament after the Australian Open was at the Rotterdam Open. He overcame Alex de Minaur in straight sets in the final to seal what was his second title of the season at the time.

Sinner's next ATP 500 event of 2024 came on grass at the Halle Open. Once again, the world No. 1 won the title, although his 7-6, 7-6 triumph against Hubert Hurkacz in the final was a tight battle.

The China Open was the other ATP 500 tournament Sinner entered in 2024. He reached the final again, but he could not claim the title this time, losing a brutal battle against Carlos Alcaraz.

Despite playing just three ATP 500 events in 2024, Sinner's excellent performances in all of them mean he is in the running to receive the highest share of the bonus money given to players who do best at the ATP 500-level tournaments.

Sinner accumulated 1,330 points in three tournaments at that level. Arthur Fils, who won the Hamburg Open and Japan Open titles this year, is closest to the Italian with 1,200 points.

However, Fils has a great opportunity to overtake Sinner after the US Open champion made the surprising decision not to defend the Vienna Open title he won last year. This means he is guaranteed to get no points during the final week of ATP 500 tournaments from October 21st to 27th.

Fils will overtake Sinner and receive $615,000 if he reaches the semifinal of the Basel Open, held during the same week as the Vienna Open. $310,000 will be awarded to the player that finishes at No. 2 on the list.

If Fils fails to reach the semifinals, Alex de Minaur, who is third, could also overtake Sinner if he wins the Vienna Open, while Ugo Humbert or Casper Ruud could tie Sinner's total of 1,330 points if either of them claims the Swiss Indoors title.
