It seems that Roger Federer will play only one match at the 2022 Laver Cup in London, and it should be a doubles match.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion will step on the tennis court for the last time in his professional career at the 2022 Laver Cup, and it should happen in a doubles match on Friday, most likely alongside his rival and very good friend, Rafael Nadal.
Federer's career will come to an end, and unfortunately, it seems that his body won't allow him to say goodbye on the singles court, where he enjoyed so much success during his career.
Early in his career, the Swiss player enjoyed success on the doubles court as well. He has won titles in Rotterdam, Miami, and Halle. Most importantly, he's an Olympic gold medalist in doubles.
Now, he will have a chance to show his doubles qualities once again, even though it's not likely by his choice, but because his body won't allow him to play a competitive singles match at the Laver Cup.
Journalist Simon Häring informed on his Twitter account that, when talking to the Swiss media, Federer stated that he wants to play only one doubles match on Friday, and that he won't compete in singles.
"Roger Federer told the Swiss Press, that his goal is to play Doubles on Friday on an 'acceptable level.' He won't play singles. Friday will be his final match as a professional."
Since the rules of the event state that every player must play at least one singles match, the Swiss Maestro will probably withdraw from the Laver Cup after his doubles match.
Then, Matteo Berrettini, who is the alternate for Team Europe, would replace Federer in the team and he will need to play at least one singles match.
