Martina Navratilova refused to compare herself to Serena Williams when one of the fans claimed that she was better than the recently retired American player.

Serena Williams bid farewell to her lengthy career and said goodbye to the crowd in New York at the 2022 US Open. Since the 40-year-old American ended her career, many fans took the chance to compare her greatness to players of past generations.

Williams lifted 23 Grand Slam titles in singles, something that only one other woman did before. That's only one of the reasons why she's referred to as the GOAT (greatest of all time) by many.

But some don't agree as one of the fans claimed that Martina Navratilova is the best player, mostly because of her success on the doubles court.

"Martina, I'm arguing: 1) your record is clearly better than Serena's, 2) corporate media touts Serena as GOAT, as part of their effort to deflect from US oligarchy and general economic oppression by focusing all attention on social identity politics."
"Let me introduce you to someone named Martina Navratilova, the real GOAT: Navratilova vs. Serena: singles slams: 18 vs. 23 (22% less), but... doubles slams: 31 vs. 14 (121% more!) singles titles: 167 vs. 73 (128% more!!) doubles titles: 177 vs. 23 (670% more!!!)"

Navratilova noticed the tweet and responded with her own opinion. She stated that it's not a good idea to compare different eras and especially titles won during them.

To explain the matter better, she used Carlos Alcaraz as an example and also thanked the fan for thinking that she was the greatest player of all time.

"You could be right on that, I don’t know. I think it is human nature to think what we have now is the best, period. Comparing eras is just silly IMO. If Carlos Alcaraz were born 50 years earlier, he would not have played the same way he plays now. But thank you in any case."
