Roberto Bautista Agut will not play further part at this year's Wimbledon Championships after testing positive for COVID-19 and has withdrawn from the tournament.
In a Twitter post, the veteran Spaniard announced that he has pulled out from his scheduled second-round match against Colombia's Daniel Elahi Galan. Before that, he had beaten Attila Balazs in straight sets to maintain his record of never losing a first-round match at Wimbledon.
Before the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, Bautista Agut reached the quarterfinals in Halle and the final in Mallorca (lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas) and was looking to showcase his grass-court abilities at SW19, where he famously made the semis back in 2019 for his career-best achievement in a Grand Slam.
But that won't happen as he became the last ATP player to withdraw because of coronavirus, joining Marin Cilic and Matteo Berrettini, who have withdrawn from the tournament and are currently self-isolating.
Bautista Agut, a former World No. 9 who had been aiming to return to the upper elite group this summer, said he had not been feeling well, and it was evident that he had to test for COVID-19. Although he confirmed that the symptoms "are not very serious," but withdrawing is the "best decision."
"Sadly today I have notified the organization of Wimbledon of my withdrawal from the competition. Yesterday I started not feeling very well and I tested positive for Covid-19. Symptoms are not very serious, but I think this is the best decision. Thank you all for your support always. I hope to be back on court soon."— Roberto Bautista Agut
Therefore, Daniel Elahi Galan will get a walkover and will advance to the Wimbledon third round for the first time. Bautista Agut, who won one title this season (Doha), will focus on recovering and then competing on the hard courts of North America.
