After Novak Djokovic lost his first match at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, his coach Goran Ivanisevic, shared thoughts on the Serbian's performance.
It was a difficult start to the clay-court season for Novak Djokovic, as prior to the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, he played only three matches during the season. Now, his coach, Goran Ivanisevic, revealed that the Serbian might not have been 100% fit when playing in Monaco.
Djokovic lost in his opening match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and according to his coach Ivanisevic, who revealed it during an interview with ubitennis.net, the 20-time Grand Slam champion was not 100% fit to compete.
"He wasn’t feeling well before he came here. He was sick. Let’s say he’s not fit 100 per cent to compete. First of all in this situation. Three weeks ago he was not allowed to play here because of the Covid decision. Then France opened and he was allowed. And it’s difficult mentally. You can play to the semi-finals, but you can’t prepare the way you would need to. And then he got sick."
Ivanisevic also spoke about Djokovic's ability to always come back or get out of trouble when needed. Also, because of this, he considers him to be the best player in the history of tennis, something that is probably expected of him as his coach.
"Djokovic for me is the best player in the history of tennis. He always finds a way to win, he always finds a way to get out of trouble. One moment he was losing three love when he was supposed to be leading three love."
"He had break points and game points. He lost a lot of energy. But he’ll find his way out of this in his constant playing. He only had three matches prior to this tournament. Clay is not easy."
