Novak Djokovic fans are taking matters into their own hands and want to see their favorite player competing at the US Open.
Recently, the Serbian's fan in the United States started an official petition to allow the 20-time Grand Slam champion to play at the 2022 US Open, which has garnered 1700 signatures so far.
The United States government recently released its updated COVID-19 guidelines for the country, and although some of the restrictions were lifted, the ones pertaining to Djokovic did not.
International travelers will be free to enter the country without showing a negative test report of the deadly virus that has claimed the lives of millions of people worldwide.
However, proof of vaccination is mandatory and that has not changed, which is why Djokovic could not play earlier this year during the spring hard-court swing in Indian Wells and Miami.
Djokovic has repeatedly stated that he will not get vaccinated under any circumstances, and he's remained true to his word. That means that he will not be able to play at the US Open, which disappointed many of his fans.
Djokovic received support from American player Tennys Sandgren, who found it quite absurd that the USTA is not helping Djokovic with an exemption to play at the tournament later this year.
Bu Djokovic's fans are hellbent on ensuring he will play at the tournament, as it has started a petition that has received at least 1700 signatures. And the person responsible for starting the petition, Padma Rajan, wrote:
"There is absolutely no reason at this stage of the pandemic to not allow Djokovic to play at the US Open 2022. US Government and USTA must work together to allow him to play. If unvaccinated American players can play, Djokovic as one of the legends of the game, must be allowed to play. MAKE IT HAPPEN, USTA."
