Novak Djokovic has finished 2022 as the man with the highest prize money won from ATP tour events this year.

The Wimbledon champ beat World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz to top the money list with earnings at $9,934,582 for the year.

The Serbian - currently ranked World No.5 - was helped to the top of the list by a faultless display at the Nitto ATP Finals where he won all five of his matches, earning him around $4.7 million.

Victories at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome alongside his 21st Grand Slam at SW19 in July were also big contributors to his final total.

Alcaraz pipped compatriot Rafael Nadal to second place with $7,655,130 in tournament income, just over $200,000 more than his hero in third.

Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas made up the other top five spots respectively.

It is a remarkable achievement for Djokovic given how his year started, after he was deported from Australia ahead of the Australian Open due to his Covid vaccination status.

He was also forced to miss the US Open and the North American swing because of the same issues.

But 2023 is looking like it could be a big one for the former World No.1, with Tennis Australia's Craig Tiley recently expressing his delight at the prospect of Djokovic returning to Melbourne.

He said: “If you look at [Djokovic’s] form – you can argue he’s the best player in the world. He’s an unbelievable tennis player and this is the place he’s won the most … He’ll be very hungry to not let the young guns on the men’s side take the title from him,"
