Nick Kyrgios is living up to his reputation as one of the finest grass-court players in men's tennis after a clinical performance against Pablo Carreno Busta in Halle.
A few weeks ago, Kyrgios made a bold claim about his proficiency on grass, stating that he was better than everybody else on the surface. But he still had to put money where his mouth is as Wimbledon is just around the corner.
The flashy Australian gave us a glimpse of what we should expect at SW19 as he needed only 68 minutes to outclass the Spaniard 6-4 6-2 at the ATP 500 event and secure a semifinal berth in the process.
After taking a two-month hiatus from the sport during the clay-court swing and missing Roland Garros, Kyrgios is playing in his second grass-court tournament of the season. He was also a semifinalist in Stuttgart this past week and will be hoping to go one round better at the Halle Open.
Kyrgios has been backed to do well at Wimbledon, potentially entering the tournament as a dark horse. We know what he is capable of doing when his game is firing on all cylinders, as grass tends to be the surface where he maximizes his strengths, like the serve and flat groundstrokes.
In his match against Carreno Busta, Kyrgios posted a jaw-dropping stat line, hitting 39 winners and just FOUR unforced errors in about an hour of court time.
This was an impressive performance considering the quality of the opponent. Kyrgios was just unplayable during the day. It also shows what the 27-year-old is capable of doing when his mind is free.
Kyrgios also dominated with his serve, winning 38 of 45 first-serve points and 31 of 60 baseline points. Kyrgios will next face Hubert Hurkacz for a spot in the championship match as he pursues his first singles title of 2022.
