Andy Roddick recently disclosed a chilling incident that happened to him while he was in Russia in 2006.
Roddick was part of the USA team that traveled to Moscow to play a Davis Cup World Group semifinals against the hosts. The former US Open champion spearheaded a squad containing James Blake, Bob, and Mike Bryan.
The Russian team was bolstered by the evergreen Marat Safin, Mikhail Youzhny, and Dmitry Tursunov. The tie was fought to the wire as Russia completed a 3-2 win in front of former president Boris Yeltsin, who trudged to the court to lead the celebrations.
They had former World No. 20 Tursunov to thank after he won a thrilling deciding rubber 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 17-15 against Roddick in a vibrant Olympic stadium. Russia went on to defeat Argentina in the final 3-2 to lift their second Davis Cup trophy.
But Roddick has since shared a horror moment during his stay in Moscow in which he alleged that a police officer "robbed" him point blank on the street. In a now-deleted tweet on social media platform X, the former World No. 1 stated he was requested to cough up to $300 or risk jail.
"I got robbed by a police officer on the street in Russia in 2006 when we were there for Davis Cup. True story. Came up and said how much cash do you have? I said $300… He simply said, give it to me or go to jail. I paid it and he went on his way. No emotion. Transactional. Let’s not get to that level of normalizing crazy sh*t. It ain’t it. Never went back."
A fan on X responded to the tweet and asked whether Roddick had any intention of going public to divulge the incident, to which the American simply replied that he "wanted to get out of there safely."
"I wanted to do my job and get out of there safely. At that time, I didn’t wanna make a stink in case it was just a bad actor. Looking back, I now understand the surrounding factors."
