Matteo Berrettini has confirmed that recent rumors of his split from girlfriend Ajla Tomljanovic are true.
Berrettini and Tomljanovic have been a very prominent tennis couple who have been dating for over two years. They used to frequently travel to tennis tournaments together and regularly shared some of their off-court moments with their followers on social media.
The Italian tennis star was preparing to play in the final of the 2022 Cinch Championships at Queen's against Serbia's Filip Krajinovic but found himself fielding a question about his private life during the pre-match press conference.
Berrettini shocked the tennis community when he said that he was "single," confirming that he was no longer in a relationship with Australian WTA player Tomljanovuic, who is ranked in the Top 50.
The World No. 10 explained that he is spending more time with his coaching team and that he "enjoyed" dedicating his free time to his family as it gave him a different approach to things.
"Yeah, I'm single but it's not like something that I am looking for, like, it's not that I'm waking up and have to find love. It's just something that is happening, it's good for me, if it doesn't, it's another day, you know. But, yeah, overall, I'm spending more time with my team, I spent a lot of time with my family when I was injured, and I enjoyed a different kind of life a little bit."
This latest development did not affect Berrettini's performance at Queen's as he romped to the title by taking down Filip Krajinovic in straight sets in the final last weekend.
It was his second successive title win on grass courts (also won in Stuttgart), and he will now head to Wimbledon in good shape and form, hoping to replicate last year's run when he reached his first Grand Slam final and lost Novak Djokovic.
