Matteo Berrettini made his maiden appearance in the Top 10 in the ATP Rankings on October 27, 2019, and remained there for almost three years.
Matteo Berrettini is one of those players who doesn't always win the big tournaments, but he carefully accumulates points from the most significant ones, and as a result, he has remained in the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings for nearly three years.
Berrettini was then injured and had to withdraw from this year's Roland Garros, where he was scheduled to defend his quarterfinals. Furthermore, no points will be granted at Wimbledon in 2022, so Berrettini, the 2021 finalist, will be unable to defend any of his points. Speaking about the situation, he said:
"I got screwed. It's a tough situation, I have so many points to defend and now I can't defend them. I'm not in the best position, we all fight to get points. I'll have to find another way. I will play as many tournaments as possible. It's bad what happened for the Russians and Belarussians, but it's also not fair for the rest of the players."
Following his quarterfinal victory in Stuttgart, he added: “It was a really tough match,” Berrettini said in his on-court interview. “Lorenzo was playing really well. I wasn’t feeling that comfortable but it is normal. I haven’t played for three months and it isn’t easy to come back. The crowd helped me and my team is always here. I am happy with the win.”
“It is really nice, we are playing in the best tournaments in the world against each other,” Berrettini said when discussing how he felt playing against friend Sonego. “We started playing against each other aged 10, so it is really nice to see where we are. He is a really nice guy, we hit a lot together.”
