Leylah Fernandez suffered an ankle injury during her 2022 Roland Garros run, and she’s yet to come back and won’t be returning at the Citi Open in Washington.

Fernandez was enjoying her best-ever run at Roland Garros, playing some super solid tennis and beating players like Amanda Anisimova and Belinda Bencic along the way.

She made it to the quarter-final, where she faced Martina Trevisan, and it was a very bizarre match. Fernandez injured her ankle in that match, suffering tremendous pain while playing but still opting to finish the match.

She even had a chance to win the match, even though ultimately, the Italian prevailed in three sets. Fans haven’t seen her since then, as her ankle injury proved to be rather significant and not minor.

Her first event back was supposed to be an exhibition match against Coco Gauff in Atlanta, but she had to abandon plans of playing there. Now she’s abandoning plans of playing at the Citi Open in Washington as well due to her ankle injury clearly not being fully healed.

The Canadian has been hopeful that her comeback could happen swiftly, but ultimately, the severity of the injury dictates that. The last thing she needs would be another major setback because this injury has already derailed what seemed like a really promising run for her.

It’s been an up-and-down season for Fernandez, who had her breakthrough last year at the US Open, making the final. She hasn’t been able to find the same level this year, but she looked close to that at Roland Garros; however, the injury stopped that momentum.

Now it’s about getting back to the courts, with the next target likely being the Canadian Open. As of now, Fernandez herself hasn’t posted any updates, but she’s on the entry list for that event, so fans are assuming that’s where the comeback will happen unless she withdraws again.
