Nick Kyrgios just can't stop winning in 2022 and for the second time this season, he defeated world number 1, Daniil Medvedev.
The Russian was defending his title at this year's US Open but immediately after he saw the draw, the fourth-round meeting with Nick Kyrgios probably reminded him of their match in Montreal. There, the Australian defeated Daniil Medvedev in three sets to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament.
In the fourth round of the 2022 US Open, the two met again and once again they fought for the spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament. In the first set of the match, they both started well on their service games before trading breaks in the sixth and seventh game.
Eventually, set reached the tie-break and Kyrgios led 5-3 as it seemed that he will serve it out. However, his opponent fought back and he was the first player to have set points. Yet, the tie-break never seemed to end as fans in New York witnessed a total of seven set points before the 27-years-old Australian finally won it 13-11.
In the second set, the story was much different. Kyrgios hit more unforced errors than winners and Medvedev also played well and soon he enjoyed a 5-1 lead and was serving for the set. Despite one last push from his opponent, world number 1 managed to win the set 6-3 and level the score of the match.
Third set of the match was really eventful and it all started already in the second game. First, Kyrgios fell on the ground and fans saw a beautiful moment of sportsmanship and then he forgot tennis rules to deny himself a chance of having a break point.
But none of that mattered as two games later, the Australian started a 8-point winning streak when his opponent was leading 40-0. Thanks to that, he got the crucial break and eventually won the set 6-3 as that was the only break of the set.
Surfing on the winning wave, Kyrgios won the fourth set in a really dominant style. He broke his opponents serve twice and after staying solid on his serve, he eventually won the match 7-6(11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open.
It will be his fourth quarterfinal appearance at a Grand Slam tournament after reaching this stage at the 2014 Wimbledon, 2015 Australian Open and this year's Wimbledon. The 27-years-old Australian will meet the 27th-seeded Karen Khachanov.
