Nick Kyrgios is a man who knows how to make headlines, and wearing a red hat during the 2022 Wimbledon Championships final was no exception.
The Australian player played the biggest match of his tennis career during summer of the 2022 season. After previously winning the 2022 Australian Open doubles title, Kyrgios stood in the final of the Wimbledon Championships.
He got there after playing inspired two weeks of tennis, but also after his semi-final opponent, Rafael Nadal, withdrew from the tournament. His final opponent was Novak Djokovic, and the Serbian was able to win the match in four sets to lift his 23rd major trophy.
After the final, both players took part in the trophy ceremony. Kyrgios went to change parts of his outfit, and he put on a bright red cap, which is obviously against the rules of the All-England Club, as players are required to wear all-white clothes.
To some, it might have appeared only as a provocation, but the Australian player later revealed that he wanted to send a message.
Shortly after the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, the tournament organizers announced that they would be relaxing their all-white underwear rule for female players, something to what the Australian may have contributed during the trophy ceremony.
On the latest episode of the Impaulsive podcast, hosted by internet personality Logan Paul, Kyrgios revealed how much he got fined for wearing that famous red hat during the trophy ceremony.
"The personalities in tennis are a bit inside of the box. And I just feel like, I'm not doing anything crazy, but I can't walk the line too much, because they would just suspend me and I need to play. I wore a red hat and red shoes for the presentation and I got fined I think almost 10 grand as well ($10,000)."
