Jannik Sinner vs Ben Shelton: 2024 Wimbledon - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Jannik Sinner will face a difficult challenge in the fourth round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, taking on very motivated Ben Shelton.

Sinner has been really strong at Wimbledon so far this year, which isn't that big of a surprise. His only problematic match was against former finalist Matteo Berrettini, and that isn't that surprising either—considering the experienced Italian's record on grass courts and at SW19.

Shelton's Wimbledon has been even more exciting as the American was forced to play some really tough matches. All three of his matches were five-setters, and he's been playing doubles on top of that, so his legs will be a bit tired in this match.

It's important to remember that because he'll be chasing that ball against Sinner most of the time. Shelton prefers to keep the rallies short, and his serve might help him with that, but the Italian has a monster return.

Head-to-head:

The two have played before in ATP Tour-level matches, meeting three times. The Italian leads the H2H 2-1, and Shelton actually won their first match. Since then, it has been Sinner who has won both. Something to note is that Shelton won the match on the faster surface.

Sinner easily won Vienna and Indian Wells, but Shelton won the faster one in Shanghai. That's notable because this match will be played on grass, which is a quick but also low-bouncing surface. Shelton also doesn't have much grass experience, which will prove a factor.

Jannik Sinner Ben Shelton

1 Rank 14
22 Age 21
41-3 2024 W/L 23-14
231-77 Career W/L 52-41

Prediction:

If this was a match played at the US Open, the American could have a shot at challenging the World No. 1. On grass, however, Sinner will be a huge favorite, and on top of that, Shelton has to be tired by now.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
