Matteo Berrettini will not compete at the 2023 Roland Garros as he's still not fit to return to the competition.
Berrettini has struggled a lot with injuries in recent years. The Italian player had the best season of his tennis career in 2021 when he reached the Wimbledon Championships final and even qualified for the ATP Finals. Since then, however, he has struggled to stay healthy.
The 27-year-old withdrew from the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this year despite winning his first two matches at the event. He then withdrew from the Madrid Open, and despite doing his best to return at his home event in Rome, Berrettini was forced to withdraw from the Italian Open as well.
Despite missing these two ATP Masters 1000 events, he still hoped to recover in time for this year's Roland Garros. The tournament starts on May 29th, but more than a week ahead of the event, Berrettini already knows he won't be ready to compete in the French capital.
Berrettini provided a statement after announcing his withdrawal from the French Open. The good news is that he is back to practice, but won't make it in time for the clay-court Grand Slam.
"Making good progress with my rehab and can't wait to be back competing. I will not be ready in time for Paris so my return to tour will be on grass at the Stuttgart Open."
As he mentioned in his announcement, Berrettini wants to make a return on the grass courts. Over the years, the Italian player has enjoyed the biggest success on the grass courts, and last season, he didn't lose a single match on this surface. That means that he enters the 2023 grass-court season with a nine-match winning streak, having won 20 of his last 21 matches.
Therefore, it's not a surprise that he wants to focus on the tournaments where he has a lot of points to defend, and those are grass-court events in Stuttgart and London. He's currently featured on the entry list for the Stuttgart Open, and he announced that event as his comeback tournament.
