It only took 24 hours for Andy Murray to confirm his decision to withdraw from the 2022 Cinch Championships due to injury.
Murray reached his second ATP final of the season but once more finished on the wrong end of the score. He lost to Italy's Matteo Berrettini in the Stuttgart Open final in three sets.
But the Scotsman was hit with a double whammy during the tournament in Germany, as he picked up an abdominal injury in the championship match against the Germans at the weekend.
Murray strained his abdominal muscles against Matteo Berrettini in the final set, leaving him unable to serve effectively. He took a medical timeout during the match but was clearly in discomfort and was heard telling his coaching team that he couldn't serve.
Murray was unsure how the injury happened during the match but was aware that he hadn't played many matches since his early 20s and his body was bound to break down regularly.
After the Stuttgart final, he could not say with certainty if he would play at Queen's this week. He is the most successful player at the ATP 500 event in West Kensington, lifting the title on five occasions.
But it's now official that he won't add to that number in 2022. He underwent a scan today, which revealed that he sustained an abdominal injury. Understandably, Murray is disappointed.
"After having a scan this afternoon, an abdominal injury means I won’t be fit to compete at Queen’s this year. The tournament means a lot to me, and it’s disappointing not to compete, especially after playing some good matches on the grass already."
Murray did not offer any commentary, but reports from his team and people close to him suggest that he will be fit to play at Wimbledon, which will be in his sights. He is a two-time former champion at the grass-court Grand Slam.
