Jannik Sinner claimed what was his first title of the 2022 season at the Croatia Open in Umag.

After lifting ATP silverware four times in 2021, it took the Italian some time to get used to this season, with him having to wait until July before he got his hands on a trophy.

He beat an always-formidable Carlos Alcaraz on the Croatian dirt 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 to claim his sixth career ATP title. This win was, in fact, his second win in the month of July against the Spaniard, contributing to what promises to be a great rivalry in future years.

Despite getting the better of the new world number 4, Jannik Sinner made sure to remain humble and focus on what he needs to do in the near future.

“I am obviously very happy. I have [had] a tough year until now, I had some unfortunate moments, but we worked every time to play better, to be a better player, to be a better person. So, I’m very happy to be finally lifting a trophy this year, but I know that I still have a lot of things to improve… It’s all about the process.”

Speaking more in-depth about the match, the Italian mentioned what he considered to be the key differences that allowed him to take home the trophy.

“I knew I had to stay there. He made some unforced errors, and I was very happy that I won this game. Then I returned well and raised my level a little bit, and I think I found a solution then.”

This was the latest installment of the classic between these two young players, which certainly is living up to the hype of recent months. With both getting better by the day, it is only a matter of time before these two are the faces of all things tennis.
