After Group D of the 2022 Davis Cup was already decided, Andy Murray was also selected for a singles match in a tie against Kazakhstan.
The 35-years-old Scotsman played against Dmitriy Popko and showed that he still knows how to win. After an hour and 29 minutes, Andy Murray triumphed 6-4, 6-3 and recorded his only win in Group D after losing two singles matches. After the match, former world number 1 spoke about his realization that he may be playing his last match in front of the home crowd for the Great Britain's Davis Cup team and he didn't hide his emotions, when saying:
“I only thought about it at about 5-2 in the second set. I wasn’t thinking about it before the weekend, during any of the doubles matches or anything. I kind of realized that as I was playing the match,” Murray said, adding:
“I lost my focus a bit and felt a little bit emotional about that. But, yeah, I wasn’t thinking about that throughout the rest of the week I guess probably because there was always another match coming as well.”
Former world number 1 also spoke about the possibility of being selected in the future as the Great Britain's team can grow in power with likes of Jack Draper. Moreover, he reflected on his doubles appearances in Glasgow, which weren't that bad, but the results speak against the Scot.
“It’s not going to be easy with the players that we have. Someone like Jack Draper is improving all the time. He’ll be involved in the team for many years. Then I don’t know which way the captain will go with the doubles after the results here, as well,” Murray said. “I don’t know what the future holds in that respect but if I’m selected I’ll definitely, definitely be involved.”
