Daniil Medvedev has admitted that he could face an early elimination at the 2022 Rolad Garros as the former Grand Slam champion prepares for a rare appearance on clay.
Medvedev has had a disrupted 2022 campaign so far and has struggled to find fluency. The Russian player initially showed good form in January, reaching the Australian Open final before eventually losing to Rafael Nadal in a marathon five-set clash.
However, he couldn't replicate such form in successive tournaments, with a semi-final run in Acapulco his best showing in the first quarter of the season. Things then got worse for the former world number one after the Miami Open, as he required surgery for a hernia injury.
Medvedev has recently returned to action at the Geneva Open as he tries to get some clay-court practice in ahead of the 2022 Roland Garros. But, when reflecting on his chances of going far at the French Open, Medvedev stated that several factors could impact his opportunity for a deep run in Paris.
"On clay, let's be honest, I can lose against anybody, French players included. I feel good playing in France. Playing against a French guy in France is not easy. They support them well. Again, talking about Bercy, played Hugo Gaston, who was on fire, beat famous Carlos Alcaraz there."
Medvedev has already been drawn against Facundo Bagnis in the first round of the Roland Garros. The duo have never met before in an ATP competition and Bagnis is ranked over 100 places below second-ranked Medvedev.
Despite making four Grand Slam finals and even winning the 2021 US Open title, Medvedev has historically struggled to carry his strength onto clay courts.
Between 2017 and 2022, the Russian was eliminated in the French Open first round, while his best-ever performance in Paris came last season when he reached the quarter-final - eventually losing to finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.
