The 2023 Qatar Open final will see two former world number ones battling it out for the trophy in Doha.
Daniil Medvedev made it to his second consecutive final, after winning the title in Rotterdam last week. On the other hand, Andy Murray, who lost in a Stuttgart Open final to Matteo Berrettini last year, will attempt to win his first ATP title in three years.
After beating Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals, Medvedev spoke about how important is confidence, especially when he was facing three set points in the second set tie-break against the Canadian.
“Today and yesterday the matches were super close. Confidence matters, because [Auger-Aliassime] had [three] set points. I managed to just stay in there and it was enough to win, but a very high-level match. Two hours for two sets.”
Ahead of the final meeting with former world no. 1 and three-time Grand Slam champion, Medvedev spoke about yet another incredible comeback of his upcoming final opponent, who recently discussed his desire to win titles.
“It’s unbelievable [what Murray has done this week]. As soon as someone arrives at match point, that’s where the match starts. So I have to be at my best from the first to the last point tomorrow to try to beat him."
“He’s a legend. He’s playing better and better, I feel like, not only here but in general. This is amazing to see. He’s fighting. Today was just unbelievable, the way he won, so I’m really happy to face him tomorrow.”
The final will be contested at 6 PM local time and for Daniil Medvedev, it means a chance to overtake Rafael Nadal in the ATP Rankings and move to the seventh place, after previously dropping out of the Top 10. On the other hand, Andy Murray can move to 43rd place, his tied highest rank since 2018, when he was ranked 16th.
