Andy Murray will contest the 2023 Qatar Open semi-final, and he's hopeful of a final as he looks to win trophies again.
Murray opened the season well in Australia, winning a couple of close matches, and he continued that trend also at the ATP 250 tournament in Doha. Both of his first two matches went to three sets, and he won both of them, similar to those in Australia, which were five-setters.
First, he outplayed Lorenzo Sonego, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4), before also beating Alexander Zverev, 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-5. Then, he bested Alexandre Muller 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to reach the semi-final stage.
After his latest match, the British player admitted that it's something he worked on in the off-season, as he has recorded some close losses in the last few years.
"The last couple of years I lost quite a lot of close matches, and it's something I spoke to my team about last year. I think the work I did in the offseason on my game, physically has given me a bit more belief in those moments. I think when you're in better shape, when you start to fatigue, it helps you make better decisions."
His goal for this year is quite clear - winning trophies. He wants to win multiple and believes himself capable of doing so after hitting a new level this year. He contested a final in Stuttgart last year but lost to Matteo Berrettini.
Now, he will play in the semi-final against Jiri Lehecka, who eliminated the top-seeded Andrey Rublev, but that doesn't bother Murray, as he has his eyes set on the trophy.
"I feel like these last few weeks are a step in the right direction, and if I continue to play and compete like I am just now, I'll have, you know, not just one opportunity to win a title, but I'll have more chances to do that in this last stage of my career."
