Daniel Evans can sympathize with Andy Murray's recent injury, which will rule him out of Queen's, but he is backing his compatriot to be fit and ready for Wimbledon.
In about two weeks, the stars of men's tennis will assemble at SW19 to compete in the third Grand Slam of the season at Wimbledon. Evans, who will be among the 128 men in the draw, hopes to see Murray there.
The two of them are great friends and have been teammates in Davis Cup matches, and they enjoy a great relationship. Evans learned about Murray's abdominal injury, which he picked up in Stuttgart this past week.
Murray injured his abdominal muscles in the Stuttgart final, which he lost to Matteo Berrettini in three sets. The three-time Grand Slam champion could not serve properly in the third set and was wincing in pain.
Later on in the press conference, Murray could not confirm if he would play at Queen's. But a scan on Monday suggested he won't and withdrew from the ATP 500 event on home soil.
It is a significant setback in Murray's preparations for Wimbledon and some of his fans are now anxious to see if he will make it to Wimbledon. Evans has now shared his view on the situation.
The one-handed Briton explained that it is "not ideal" for Murray to pick up an injury in such an important phase of his season but is tipping him to recover in time for Wimbledon later this month.
"It’s not ideal [for Murray]. I don’t know if he is [injured] or not or what the deal is. But if anybody knows how to prepare himself for Wimbledon, it’s him."
"I don’t think if he’s play this week or next week, in my opinion it wouldn’t matter for his preparations as long as he can prepare. If he can still play tennis in a week or so, he’ll be okay. So in that sense, it’s not ideal, but it’s not the end of the world for him."
