Holger Rune has leaped into the defense of his girlfriend, Caroline Donzella, following assertions that their budding relationship was affecting his performances on the court.
For many months Rune was rumored to be dating the Italian-Dutch model who was born in Genoa, Italy. Donzella was pictured in Rune's corner during some of his matches earlier in the spring, notably in Monte Carlo and during the summer at Wimbledon.
Donzella is a popular model, amassing close to 100,000 followers on Instagram. She is the former girlfriend of Italian soccer player Andrea Petagna. In addition to being a model, Donzella works in luxury real estate in Monaco, where Rune resides.
Last month, Rune spilled the beans of their rumored relationship. The young Dane shared a short clip on Instagram where they could be seen holding hands and blowing kisses to the fans on social media. At the time, Rune was enjoying his vacation before embarking to China for the Asian swing.
And very recently, Holger Rune's mother, Aneke chimed in on the discussion of his son, possibly needing external counseling, as he grows up. Rune hasn't spoken a lot about his girlfriend Caroline Donzella, who is six years older but has refuted claims that she is the cause of his bad run of results.
"Caroline is not to blame for my poor sports performance. That is only my responsibility. People only want to look for external factors and blame others, but only I am responsible."
The Dane has won once in 11 matches at all levels. This week, he saw his title defense in Stockholm end in his first match. Rune is in danger of falling outside the world's Top 10 in the coming weeks, as he is defending 1000 points at the Paris Masters.
He has since appointed six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker to take over as his new coach until the end of the season.
