Dominic Thiem is making the most of his spare time in Spain despite crashing out of the 2022 Madrid Open.
Competing in his fourth ATP tournament of the season (including Challengers) following his recovery from a terrible wrist injury, Thiem was surprisingly beaten by Andy Murray in straight sets. This means Thiem has now lost in all four matches he has played this season.
Despite suffering another setback in his comeback, Thiem was invited by clothing sponsor Adidas on a stadium tour of the Santiago Bernabeu, which is the home of the Spanish football club Real Madrid.
Thiem is an avid football fan and usually supports the English Premier League club, Chelsea. Like some other tennis players, such as Carlos Alcaraz, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, he watched the epic match between Real Madrid and Manchester City in the semifinal of the Champions League.
Trailing 3-4 in the first leg of the tie, the Spanish giants produced a remarkable comeback in the return leg on home soil. They scored three goals from the 90th-minute mark to overturn the result during the night and the aggregate score and advance into the final.
After the match, Thiem took to social media, thanking Adidas for the opportunity to watch the match, and was exuberant to experience the atmosphere in real-time.
"Yesterday, I was invited to the semifinals of the Champions League in Madrid! After a few successful days of training, I was given the opportunity to be a spectator and to encourage! The atmosphere in and around Madrid, yesterday and in the last few days was simply unbelievable! I would like to thank @adidas for the invitation yesterday! It was just an amazing night and a great game!"
Thiem also touched upon his future plans notifying fans that he has already arrived in Rome and working hard on his comeback. He also left an inspirational message to all saying:
"Do your best! It’ll be worth it."
