Dominic Thiem will play in the 2022 Estoril Open after he received a wild card into the ATP 250 event in Portugal.
The biggest achievement of the Austrian's career came in 2020 when he won the US Open. However, the champion from Flushing Meadows spent the majority of the 2021 and 2022 seasons recovering from injury, but now he's ready to return.
After not playing since June 2021, Thiem played his first ATP Challenger event in Marbella, where he lost in his first match against Argentina's Pedro Cachin 3-6, 4-6. And now, fans will get a chance to see him in the ATP Tour-level tournament, as he received a wild card for the 2022 Estoril Open.
Estoril Open is one of the prestigious clay-court tournaments which was won by players such as Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Stan Wawrinka, and Juan-Martin Del Potro in the past.
Now, another great player will try to win it, as Dominic Thiem confirmed his participation in the event. The 2022 Estoril Open will run from April 25th until May 1st and will offer more than 500,000€ in prize money and 250 points for the champion.
It will be especially those points that the Austrian will be targeting, as after not playing for almost a year, he will desperately need to recover his ranking in order to be able to enter the biggest tournaments in the world.
Of course, he will have a protected ranking for previously injured players available, but he can use that only for a certain number of tournaments. On top of that, Thiem is expected to receive a lot of wild cards, as the one for the Estoril Open.
Yet, every player prefers to have a high ranking, as that gives more advantages than only being able to enter the tournament. Many events have a first-round bye for the top seeds, something Thiem was used to in the past.
