Carlos Alcaraz is the 2023 Wimbledon champion; he's also the world number one on the ATP Tour, and he's the first player to book a spot at the ATP Finals in Turin.
Some two weeks ago, Carlos Alcaraz confidently said that his goal is to win Wimbledon, and while he did book a sport in the final, very few actually expected him to get the job done. The supremely confident Spaniard admitted after the match that he didn't think he could do it, but he ultimately did.
He produced a sensational level to stun seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic to win his second Grand Slam trophy. The most important thing for Alcaraz achieved by the victory is obviously the Wimbledon trophy. The significance of the victory itself is much more than just winning the trophy.
He talked after the match about how the win proved to him that he could actually take on Novak Djokovic in a best-of-five match, something he was unsure of after the Roland Garros disappointment. It also ensured that Alcaraz will remain number one for a couple of more weeks.
The matchup was essentially a clash for the number one rank, as the winner was pretty much ensured to emerge at the top of the rankings. Alcaraz won the match and remained number one for the time being. He also qualified for the ATP Finals in Turin officially after getting to 6 675 points in 2023, following the Wimbledon triumph.
It's been an absolutely dominant year for the Spaniard who lost only once before a semi-final of an event he played and that happened in Rome when he was stunned by Fabian Maroszan. He leads the tour in wins (47) as well as winning percentage (92.2%)
He also leads the Tour with six trophies this year alone (Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Queen's Club, Indian Wells, Madrid, and Wimbledon). The 2023 ATP Finals are held from November 12th to 19th in Turin, Italy.
