Berrettini, Wawrinka & Monfils Among Wild Card Recipients For Monte-Carlo Masters

by Zachary Wimer

The 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters is only days away, and the wild cards were announced, including some big names like Matteo Berrettini, Stan Wawrinka, and Gael Monfils.

The first ATP Masters 1000 clay-court event of the season always comes in hot, with very little time for many players to prepare. Luckily, they've done this for many years, as the tournament holds a solid spot in the calendar, so generally, it's not that challenging, and quite a few of them play preparation events.

That's the case with some of this year's wild card recipients, who are all in action this week. Berrettini is in action at the Marrakech Open, and the Italian is doing quite well.

Gael Monfils started well at the Estoril Open, but he lost in the second round to Marton Fucsovics, and Stan Wawrinka played there as well but has likely already booked his flight to Nice after his second-round loss.

All three players received a wild card for the Monte-Carlo Masters, which runs from April 7th to 14th. The fourth wild card was given to a 25-year-old native player, Valentin Vacherot, who is ranked in the Top 150.

It will be a good chance for him to play on this level, but it's well-deserved after some solid showings on the lower level. Berrettini will also benefit greatly from a chance to play the main draw, as his form is looking really solid and improving by the day.

He needs the points to improve his ranking, and the ATP Masters 1000 event offers plenty of those. Monfils has been putting together some nice performances lately, so the wild card for the former finalist of this event is also well-deserved.

Wawrinka is another player who has played well in Monte Carlo in the past and deserves a chance to play once more in front of the fans. The event also gave out some qualifying wild cards. Diego Schwartzman, native player Lucas Catarina, and Lucas Pouille were recipients of those.
